Story — From the floating gardens of Kashmir:

In the Dal Lake, gardens grow on water.

The Kashmiris call them raads — islands of floating earth, anchored by nothing but roots, moved by nothing but the current. On them grow lotus, saffron, cucumber, iris. Every morning the shikara men harvest them in silence, the mist still low over the water.

The lavender is the colour of the Kashmiri dawn. The mirror-work catches light the way the lake does in fragments, briefly, then gone. And at the hem, stitched in pearls so small they are almost secret botanicals. Vines. Flowers mid-open.
